The idea

A front page from the days when the news arrived on paper. A high-contrast masthead, six narrow columns separated by hairline rules, datelines in small caps and a single halftone photograph above the fold. Dense, trustworthy and quietly authoritative.

Broadsheet Press translates the front page of a mid-century regional broadsheet to the screen. It is built on a strict six-column grid with vertical hairline rules, a high-contrast transitional serif for headlines, and a tight bookish serif for reading. Information density is a virtue here: datelines, bylines, section labels and small numbers give the page the texture of a real paper. Colour is almost absent; a single editorial red marks breaking items the way a printer's spot colour once did.

Principles

  • Rules, not boxes: divide everything with 1px vertical and horizontal lines.
  • Every story gets a dateline, a byline or a section label.
  • Headlines are statements of fact, written in sentence case.
  • Pack the page — density signals seriousness, as long as columns stay aligned.
  • Red means urgent; use it once per page at most.

Motion

A ticker of headlines runs under the masthead at a reading pace of 40px per second. Column rules draw downward from the top on entry, as if the page is being set.

Do & don't

Do

  • ✓ Use a double rule (3px + 1px) under the masthead and between major sections.
  • ✓ Justify body text in narrow columns and enable hyphenation.
  • ✓ Add datelines like PORT ALDRY, Wed. — before lead paragraphs.

Don't

  • ✕ Don't use rounded corners or shadows anywhere.
  • ✕ Don't use colour photographs.
  • ✕ Don't centre body text.
