The idea
Pages from a Victorian collector's herbarium, re-set for the screen. Pressed-specimen plates in numbered frames, Latin binomials in italic, catalogue numbers in a small typewriter face and a deep moss green on foxed cream. Patient, precise and quietly delighted by detail.
Herbarium Journal borrows from Victorian herbarium sheets, 19th-century botanical plates and the field notebooks of amateur naturalists. It feels like opening a museum drawer: cream paper with faint foxing, specimens mounted in numbered frames, Latin names in italic, accession numbers in a small typewriter face. The palette is moss, lichen and rust, all slightly desaturated as if faded by a century of daylight. Precision is the charm — everything is catalogued, numbered and labelled.
Principles
- Catalogue everything: plates get Roman numerals, items get accession numbers.
- Show specimens flat and centred on paper, never in lifestyle scenes.
- Use italic for every Latin name and for one word in each headline.
- Frame content in thin ruled plates, like mounted herbarium sheets.
- Prefer small, detailed type over large slogans.
Motion
Specimen plates settle into place with a soft 16px rise; on hover each plate tilts 1.5 degrees as if lifted from the folio by a corner.
Do & don't
Do
- ✓ Number plates with Roman numerals (Pl. I, Pl. II).
- ✓ Italicise all Latin names, e.g. Rumex acetosa.
- ✓ Use double-ruled frames around specimen images.
Don't
- ✕ Don't use bright or neon greens.
- ✕ Don't round corners beyond 2px.
- ✕ Don't show people gardening or lifestyle imagery.
