The idea

Everything is set in one typewriter-style monospace on warm cream paper, like a manuscript or a plaintext email from someone thoughtful. Hierarchy comes from spacing, rules made of dashes and the occasional red-pencil underline. Honest, quiet and deliberately unfashionable.

Plaintext Cream is the beauty of plain text taken seriously. Everything — headlines, body, buttons, labels — is set in a single typewriter monospace on warm cream paper. Hierarchy comes only from size, weight, spacing and rules drawn with dashes; colour is limited to ink, one red pencil and one blue pencil. It borrows from manuscripts, typewritten letters, early plaintext email and the zine tradition. It should feel personal, sincere and calm, like a letter rather than a landing page.

Principles

  • One typeface for everything; hierarchy comes from size and space.
  • Red pencil marks what matters; use it once per section.
  • Rules are made of dashes or a single ink hairline.
  • Write in the first person; this is a letter, not an ad.
  • Leave wide margins like a manuscript page.

Motion

The headline types on at typewriter speed with a carriage-return pause between lines. Links get a hand-drawn red-pencil underline that sweeps in from left to right on hover.

Do & don't

Do

  • ✓ Set everything in Courier Prime, including buttons.
  • ✓ Use dashed rules to divide sections.
  • ✓ Keep the reading column under 64 characters.

Don't

  • ✕ Don't add a second typeface.
  • ✕ Don't use boxes, cards or shadows.
  • ✕ Don't use photography or icons.
